Thank you, Martha “Suggs” Spencer, for presenting

The Underground Railroad history with your father’s music and your family!

By Kate Stone  Leader Publication, Michiana

Suggs and Spencer Underground Railroad Museum is hosting its Annual Freedom Festival Aug. 6-7 in Vandalia.

When her father, James Suggs, passed away, Martha Suggs Spencer did research on her family tree and discovered that she has both black and white relatives who can be traced back to England as well as the slave ships that docked in North Carolina

James had always dreamed of unity between the races. In his memory, Martha organized the Suggs Freedom Festival. She believes that black history is important for everyone to learn, which is why she continues to host the Freedom Festival each year.

The festival will be hosted by the Rev. Sylvester William, with live broadcasting by WUBS Radio. There will also be barbecue, blues tunes, camping areas and vendors.

Each day’s festivities will begin at 10 a.m. Admission to the festival is $6 and students are $3.

The Suggs and Spencer Underground Railroad Museum is located at 60354 North Main St. in Vandalia.

For more information, contact Martha Suggs Spencer at (574) 360-1106.
