Christmas Kindness from Charity Helps Two Asheville Veterans

This Christmas season (2024),  Two veterans from Asheville are experiencing the warmth of community support, thanks to the efforts of ABCCM and the Veterans Restoration Quarters. The assistance provided has been a beacon of hope during a particularly challenging time, especially in the aftermath of the difficulties brought by Helene.

Jeff Powell, a 56-year-old Navy veteran, also encountered significant hardships. The flooding caused by Helene not only damaged his car but also led to a power outage that resulted in the loss of $1,000 worth of food. Financially strained and struggling to make ends meet, Powell found a lifeline in the assistance provided by ABCCM. The support he received has been crucial in helping him navigate these tough times, and he is profoundly thankful for the aid that has made his holiday season brighter. It is to be noted that, Jeff Powell has been a board member of ‘We The Kids Inc’ which is a non-profit organization.

“We were in a crisis,” Powell said. “I kept wondering, what am I going to do? Where am I going to go? But ABCCM and Veterans of the Carolinas stepped in, making sure we had food for Christmas and helping me cover my bills.”

“Thanks to the generosity of donors, Powell was able to give his 10-year-old son, Jeremiah, a joyful Christmas, despite the hardships they faced.”

Robert Best, a 65-year-old Army veteran, has faced a series of daunting challenges. After suffering a heart attack, he underwent a triple bypass surgery, which left him physically and emotionally drained. Living in a room at the Quality Inn, Best found himself battling depression and a sense of hopelessness about his future. However, his life took a positive turn when he was referred to ABCCM by the Asheville VA hospital. Now, as part of the Veterans program under ABCCM’s shelter initiative, Best has found renewed hope and a sense of purpose. He expresses deep gratitude for the care and support he has received, which has been instrumental in his recovery and well-being.

“I had to have triple bypass surgery,” Best recalled. “After a long recovery, I was able to return to Asheville, my home since 1994. The surgery really took a toll on me.”

“On Christmas Day, I want to thank God for still being here,” said Best. “It’s been tough, but ABCCM has been there for me. They’ve given me another chance at life to do good and make something of it. That’s what I hope and pray for every day.”

“A passionate guitarist, Best picked up his instrument to play a few chords for News 13 during a visit to his room. He still has nine months left in the ABCCM Veterans shelter program and is deeply thankful for the care and support he’s received.”

Both veterans are deeply appreciative of the help they’ve received from ABCCM and the Veterans Restoration Quarters. This support has not only alleviated their immediate struggles but also brought a sense of community and compassion into their lives. As they celebrate this Christmas, they do so with hearts full of gratitude, knowing that they are not alone in their journey.
