A kindergarten class in PS75, a public school in New York City created a stir this week when it was discovered that the American flag was covered with the flags of 22 other nations.
The school claims this was a project for the students to show their appreciation of other nations. The flag was to be auctioned off to raise money, but was cancelled due to the uproar at which it created.
The red and white stripes of the American flag were covered with the flags of 22 Spanish speaking countries, but also included the flag of Russia. Under the flag, it said, “WE pledge allegiance to an International Flag!”
A description of the project stated, the students made a beautifully painted stretched canvas American Flag and then applied flags from all Spanish speaking countries and Russia onto the stripes of the American flag. All the children chose a flag to color and applied it over the stripes of the American flag. This project was done for, “our dual language classroom that strives to be a place where everyone feels welcome.”
One has to wonder if this was the correct thing to teach for a class of kindergarten students. One hundred years ago when New York City was teeming with many different immigrants from all over Europe, the only flag that was represented in the schoolrooms of N.Y. City was Old Glory, the American Flag. Boy how things have changed. America is not the place it once used to be, but with We The Kids and God’s help we can turn this nation around in the right direction.
